American Legion Auxiliary Unit 524 Encourages Everyone To Honor Fallen Warriors

Join us on Saturdays and Sundays in May from Noon to 4:00 pm on the boardwalk in front of the Music Pier, where members of American Legion Post Family 524 distribute red poppies in exchange for a donation.
The poppy fields in Belgium, particularly in the Flanders region (Westhoek), are legendary for blooming on former World War I battlefields, notably around Ypres, Diksmuide, and Polygon Wood, typically during late spring to early summer. The poppies (Papaver rhoeas) began growing after the soil was disturbed, which occurred due to “massive trench warfare and shelling”, breaking the seeds' dormancy. The Flanders Field poppy has become an internationally recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain.
The Flanders Hotel in Ocean City was named in memory of the fallen Allied troops of World War I’s dreadful “Battle of Flanders”, fought in Belgium in 1914.
We need your help on both Saturday & Sunday to distribute the Poppies. There is a sign-up board at the Post! Check your calendars and sign up at the Post or contact Leigh Costigan, Poppy Chairman, at 215-939-0323.
